Based on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale (NBAS)*, it is an introduction to newborn behavioural states, stress signs and self-regulatory abilities. The NBO provides strength-based, individualised information and anticipatory guidance about the infant’s behaviour, as well as enhancing the practitioner-parent relationship, and parent-baby relationship. The two day course is followed by self- practice on 5 infants and submission of recording forms and a short parent questionnaire for an NBO Certificate of Completion.
* The NBAS is recommended in the CHPP 2008 (now the Healthy Child Programme), Department of Health, Flying Start programme by the Welsh Assembly and for the Heads Up programme by the Scottish government.
